The World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is celebrated every year on 26 April. The theme for 2020 is Innovate for a Green Future. World IP Day 2020 puts innovation and the IP rights that support it at the heart of efforts to create a green future. This is because the choices we make today will shape our tomorrow. The earth is our home, we need to care for it.
The World IP day is intended at educating ordinary citizens about the role of IP in their everyday life. Carving a pathway to a green future is a modern-day imperative; we all share in this challenge and each have a role in building a green futur.
Campaign message from WIPO
- A green future means tackling climate change and IP-driven innovation will be key to solving this shared, global challenge.
- New climate-friendly innovation and new thinking are needed urgently to tackle the climate crisis and achieve a green future. The IP system can incentivise this.
- WIPO leads the work in establishing a balanced and effective international IP system that supports innovation.
The campaign celebrates all the pioneering inventors and creators who are working to shape a future that is green and from which we will all benefit.
We explore how a balanced and robust IP system can support the emergence of a green economy that works with and not against the earth’s life-support systems through considering the following types of IP; Patent, Designs, Trade Marks, Geographical Indications and Copyright.
Be part of the transition to a greener global economy, join us in exploring the role that innovation and IP rights play in opening a pathway to a Green Future. Share your favourite green innovations and tell us how you are going to boost your green credentials.

You are kindly requested to indicate to us how your institutions will be participating in any of the suggested IP awareness events or other ideas that you may have for the 2020 World IP Day celebrations at your institution, and the dates of such activities.
